Van Kahvaltı Evi
A well-known breakfast spot serving a traditional Van-style spread with multiple cheeses, honey, kaymak, olives, eggs and endless tea. It’s one of the best places in Istanbul to experience a full Turkish breakfast culture.
Hagia Sophia
Originally built in the 4th century, later rebuilt in 537 CE, this monumental structure has served as a Byzantine cathedral, Ottoman mosque, museum, and mosque again. It now charges a high entry fee for visitors while still functioning as a place of worship!
Blue Mosque
Officially called Sultan Ahmed Mosque, this 17th-century Ottoman mosque is known for its six minarets and blue İznik tiles. Entry remains free.
Fountain of Sultan Ahmed III
An ornate early 18th-century fountain located between Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. It reflects the decorative style of the Ottoman Tulip Era.
Grand Bazaar
One of the world’s oldest and largest covered markets, filled with jewellery, textiles, souvenirs and carpets. Prices tend to be higher than elsewhere in the city.
Spice Bazaar
Smaller and more compact than the Grand Bazaar, this historic market specialises in spices, teas, sweets and Turkish delight. It feels more focused and easier to navigate.
Mackerel Sandwich Restaurants
Rich’s favourites were under the bridge!
Tünel (bottom station)
Opened in 1875, this short underground funicular connects Karaköy to the top of the hill near Galata. It’s the world’s second-oldest underground railway after London.
Galata Tower
Built in 1348 by the Genoese as part of the city’s defensive walls, this stone tower later served as a fire watchtower and prison. Today it’s a paid viewpoint with panoramic city views.
İstiklal Street
A long pedestrian shopping street running between Tünel and Taksim Square. It’s packed with shops, restaurants and the nostalgic red tram.
Galaktion
A Georgian restaurant in Istanbul serving dishes such as khinkali and salads. It reflects the city’s multicultural food scene beyond Turkish cuisine.
