I spent a year living in nearby Byron Bay (just over the border in New South Wales) and visited the Gold Coast plenty of times.

Afterward, explore the coastal walkways that connect Coolangatta to neighboring Greenmount Beach and Rainbow Bay. If you’re visiting during whale migration seasons, watch out for the marine creatures!
